Snow Shoeing on Sunday

It was sunny and warm and I went snow shoeing on the mountains behind Summit Central.  I took my camera and experimented with taking pictures of Shadows.  There were a couple I liked, but it is going to take a lot more work to figure out how to photograph shadows. You know it is time to head home when you start taking pictures of power poles, but I liked their color in the afternoon sun.

Lodge Lake

You may think that it is spring, but above 3500 feet it is still winter.  The sun was shining and I took off snow shoeing to Lodge lake.  While tromping up and down the hills, I ran across a tank at the top of a mountain.  Not one that holds water, but one of those world war two tanks with treads, turrets, and a large gun.  It is either let over from the ski wars of the 60’s or used by the DOT as part of avalanche control.  I never made it down to Lodge Lake because Beaver Lake was so beautiful.  It was starting to melt out and had all of these great blue pools and ice.

It was really great to walk around in the sunshine at a a comfortable 45 degrees and lay in the warm sunshine. (For about five minutes until the cold snow soaked through my pants.

Commonwealth Basin

I took a snow snow shoe trip to loosen up my leg muscles after the previous days hike. I went up to commonwealth basin and was surprised at the amount of snow.  It was probably eight feet deep up in the basin. I believe it was the last day the ski areas were open and all of the people were on the slopes, but there were very view on the trail.  Guess they are off doing other spring activities.  I ran into a man and his beautiful dog.

It is 1/4 wolf and 3/4 malamute and it really liked playing in the snow. It would be a great companion for Nikki, if he didn’t accidently crush her in his playfulness.  The sun was low and it lit the bottom of the creek bed.

Oyster Dome

I went on this hike with the intention of taking pictures of the different textures that I ran across:

But then I noticed that the skunk cabbage were in bloom.

And of course there are some great views of Puget Sound along the trail.

So many beautiful thing.  It was a great hike even though I forgot my hiking boots and poles. I’m a little disoriented since my recent trip to Arizona. I guess the heat got to me.  It was over 70 degrees down there.
