was a spot where we would get a day of rest to loll in the sun and rest for our final push over Donahue Pass. We were all suffering from accumulated exhaustion. Each day we burned 5000 calories hiking and consumed 2000 calories in food. In the morning we woke, not quite rested from the day before. It was most noticeable at our rest stops. Where on the first days of the hike, people would jump in the lake at a rest stop
or go off the trail and climb up rocks to get a better view,
these days, we would just rest.
But it was at the base of Banner and Ritter that I got to see a beautiful sunrise. I headed out of my tent at 6:00 in the morning as the sky was just starting to lighten.
I could see the first glow of morning
and the terminator, that dividing line between day and night, slowly work its way down the peaks
across the valley
to the stream at my feet.
It took thirty minutes to light up my world
and then I had the whole day to rest and enjoy it.
